Servo valves and hydraulic pumps are the precision hearts of modern fluid power systems. When inserted into a bore, the flexible ball hone operates in an oversized condition—the tool diameter is slightly larger than the bore diameter. This ensures that the abrasive globules maintain consistent contact with the bore wall as the tool rotates.

Each abrasive globule has independent suspension, which gives the tool three critical operating characteristics:

  • Self-centering: The tool automatically aligns with the bore centerline

  • Self-aligning: The abrasive globules follow the bore contour without binding

  • Self-compensating for wear: Consistent cutting action is maintained as the tool wears

The flexible ball hone operates through a low-temperature, low-pressure abrading process that removes burrs and surface irregularities without removing significant base material. This is essential for precision bores where tolerances must be preserved.

Servo Valve Spool Bores

Servo valves require extremely tight clearances between the spool and its bore. Any burr or irregularity can cause the spool to stick, leading to erratic valve response or complete failure. The flexible ball hone is highly effective for deburring and finishing these small-diameter bores.

For aluminum servo valve bodies, aluminum oxide (AO) grit is recommended, as silicon carbide (SC) can be too aggressive. The flexible ball hone removes burrs from the bore while imparting a smooth, plateaued finish that enhances seal contact and reduces wear.

Hydraulic Pump Cylinder Bores

Hydraulic pumps contain multiple cylinder bores that must maintain precise dimensions and surface finish. The flexible ball hone cleans these bores while imparting a controlled surface condition that's unobtainable by any other method.

The flexible ball hone removes smeared, fragmented, and amorphous metal while smoothing nicks and scratches. This is particularly important for pumps, where surface irregularities can cause fluid to bypass the piston, reducing efficiency and generating heat.

Cross-Hole Deburring

Servo valves and pump housings often contain cross-drilled passages that intersect main bores. The drilling process leaves burrs at these intersections that must be removed to prevent contamination and flow disruption. The flexible ball hone is very effective for deburring cross drilled holes, port radiusing, and edge blending. Because the tool is self-centering, it can reach intersections that rigid tools cannot access.

Small Precision Bores

Flexible ball hones are available for bores as small as 4 mm (0.157 inches). This makes them suitable for tiny precision bores found in servo valves, small pumps, and fuel injectors. The BC series Flex-Hone tools range in size from 4 mm to 76 mm (3 inches).

Flexible ball hones can be used in virtually any rotating spindle, including handheld electric drills. This supports field maintenance operations, reducing downtime since components don't need to be sent out to a shop.

Selection Guide for Precision Applications

Bore Size

Specify the bore diameter, and the flexible ball hone is supplied slightly oversized. If the bore size falls between two Flex-Hone sizes, choose the larger-diameter tool.
