A Celebration of Tradition and Team Spirit: Dragon Boat Festival at Longguang
As summer warmth settles over Shanghai, we find ourselves approaching one of China’s most cherished traditions—the Dragon Boat Festival, or Duanwu Festival. This year, the celebration is particularly special as we mark the occasion with a well-deserved three-day holiday from June 19 to 21, 2026 .
The Legend and Spirit of Duanwu
The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. With a history spanning over 2,000 years, it originated during the Warring States period and carries deep cultural significance . The festival commemorates Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet who drowned himself in the Miluo River after learning that his beloved Chu State had been conquered. According to legend, locals raced out in their boats to retrieve his body and dropped rice balls into the river to distract the fish—giving rise to the two most iconic traditions: dragon boat racing and eating zongzi .
Today, the festival has evolved into a vibrant celebration of Chinese heritage. In 2009, it was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a recognition of its enduring cultural value . Beyond dragon boat races, traditions include hanging wormwood and calamus, drinking realgar wine, and wearing perfume sachets—all believed to ward off evil spirits and invite good health .
